Adel Abidin: Hopscotch

Mixed media video / Sound installation

Hopscotch is a game that children play all around the world, but here the squares take a dark twist as they lead to a closed gate – into another, unknown world. The installation is a visual reconstruction of my childhood memories in Iraq: “In this game, the players are being watched by people who have the power to terminate much more than the game. In a police state, children are taught the ‘rules of the game’ very early on.”
