Adel Abidin: Camel Toe Chairs

8 Photographic prints as posters

Appearances they say, can be deceiving. What you think you are seeing maybe very different from reality; what you perceive to be one thing, can be the polar opposite. In this photographic series, we glimpse a side of man as we rarely care to see him - the Hyper-Sexualized Macho Man with a Camel Toe. Blending gender stereotypes together with humorous obscenity, 'Camel Toe' straddles our traditional perceptions of masculinity, femininity and the grey area that lies between them, and between their legs. The archetypal 'I am man, hear me roar' alpha male, complete with a dominating posture of power and a bouncer's physique is transformed with a simple flick of a wrist to unleash a more feminized image. Employing sarcasm and exaggeration to ruminate on sexual identity and gender, this series is a commentary on the duality of man (and woman) and our deeply-entrenched notions that our sexuality defines who we are – but does it really?
