The Revolt – (chapter III)
Unmatched Narratives presents the recorded history of the Zanj Rebellion (869–883 CE) as told by the victors. Using drawings formed through ink bleeding across paper, the work unfolds as a mixed-media wall installation stretching across the gallery like a black-and-white archive of historical episodes.
The drawings are displayed in custom acrylic frames incorporating mirrored surfaces, arranged to evoke the experience of browsing a book along the wall. Viewers move physically from one framed drawing to the next, engaging with the work as if navigating a fragmented historical record.
At first glance, the installation appears to consist of simple black silhouettes. As viewers move closer, omitted details surface through the mirrors, revealing fragments that cannot be seen directly. These reflective elements expose what has been concealed, prompting audiences to question what is shown, what is hidden, and how historical “truth” is constructed.
