They Asked Me to Change It is a permanent neon installation on the façade of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. The work displays the sentence “They Asked Me to Change It and I Agreed”, a quiet yet provocative gesture that reflects on the negotiations often hidden within institutional practice.
By placing the declaration directly onto the exterior of the museum, the piece brings an internal process into public view. The neon text becomes both an admission and an exposure—an artist openly acknowledging compromise, and an institution inadvertently revealing its influence. The façade, usually a symbol of authority, transforms into a site of dialogue about authorship, agency, and the delicate boundary between artistic intention and institutional expectation.
