On the third day of the American bombardment of Baghdad in 1991—during the targeted strike on the Republic Bridge—an unusual and haunting scene emerged. A dead cow rested on a broken section of the collapsed bridge, an image rarely seen in the heart of the city.
Nearly two decades later, I returned to this moment, imagining the final seconds that brought her there. In my reflection, the cow had been called by the herd waiting on the opposite bank of the river. In a desperate attempt to reach them, she leapt—only to fall amid the violence unfolding around her.
